How long have you been opening your home to adults with developmental disabilities or living with someone with a developmental disability?

I have been working with HLADD for 6 years.

What advice do you wish you received when you first started providing services?

That this is not just a journey of involvement, but an emotional journey that involves more than you and your person. Also to always create balance for yourself.

What is the hardest part about the work you do?

Striving daily to create an environment of safety and peace with structure that complies with the rights of your person and the company when nothing is textbook.

What is the best part about the work you do?

When your person says “thank you” and I can see that they’re striving and happy.

What is a dream that you have for yourself?

To be able to retire and live out my days occasionally volunteering with different ministries assisting homelessness. I also want to spend time gardening and being with my grandbabies and 2 dogs.

What is the dream you have for the person(s) you are supporting?

To strive for their dreams and to be able to reach them. Most importantly, to be happy!

Who do you consider a hero and why?

My mom, who raised 8 kids on a shoestring budget but managed to provide for us and show us love. The most important thing that my mother ever gave us, and that we all still lean on today, is the belief in God! Our faith has been a stoppage to many things that could have altered the paths in our lives in the wrong way. Instead, we have been guided in the right way and given us love, happiness, and gratification.
