In honor of DSP Recognition Week and as part of our new Dedicated DSPs series, we’re spotlighting direct support professionals across LADD who go above and beyond. Read on to get to know Dion Tindera, a DSP at Victory Parkway.

How long have you worked for LADD?

I have worked at LADD for 2 years.

Tell us a little bit about what you do.

I am the Lead DSP for a house at our Victory Parkway Program.  To sum it up, I oversee everything that is going on in the house on a daily basis and make sure that all is running smoothly.  I do everything from take the residents to medical appointments and give them advice about healthy living, to plan the weekly menu and do the grocery shopping, to training and assisting staff in the house with any needs they have and everything in between.

Why were you inspired to work with people with developmental disabilities?

I had a friend who worked for LADD at the time I applied and thought that it sounded like a job I would enjoy since I like to be able to make a positive impact and better the lives of others around me.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I find it most rewarding when I am able to help people advocate for their wants and needs, and then achieve the results of the goals that they have set for themselves such as getting out into the world to do something they enjoy or making changes to their diet and improving their overall health.

Name one thing you’ve learned from someone you support.

I have learned that with persistence and dedication you can accomplish your goals no matter how difficult they may seem.

What does it take to be an outstanding DSP?

To be an outstanding DSP requires strong communication skills, patience and the willingness to listen to and emotionally relate to those that you support so that you can help them lead more fulfilling lives.
