Local leader Neil Tilow named Interim CEO as pioneering nonprofit executive prepares for next chapter
CINCINNATI, OH — After 15 years of transformative leadership at LADD (Living Arrangements for the Developmentally Disabled), Chief Executive Officer Susan Brownknight has announced her departure. Brownknight will officially conclude her historic tenure at the helm of LADD on July 17, 2026. During her decade and a half of service she championed the dignity, independence and rights of individuals with developmental disabilities, elevating the Cincinnati-based nonprofit into a celebrated, nationally recognized leader in its field.
Under Brownknight’s leadership, LADD transformed into a pioneering model for developmental disability services, marked by a commitment to community integration and innovative technological solutions for independent living.
“Leaving LADD is one of the hardest things I have ever done,” says Brownknight. “I fell in love with this mission and the individuals who trust us with their lives, dignity, safety and joy. Serving them and working alongside our dedicated staff has been the privilege of my lifetime. This decision was never about leaving LADD, but about moving toward what I believe is my calling to work on larger issues, elevate untold stories and help shape the conversations that impact people far beyond any single organization.”
A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion
During her 15-year tenure, Brownknight spearheaded numerous high-impact initiatives that elevated LADD to a premier regional and national nonprofit. Key achievements include:
- Global Recognition: Developing the Smart Living Systems model, which earned honors from the United Nations for innovation in accessibility.
- Housing Expansion: Launching Smart Living Homes, including nine new homes in 2026 expanding LADD’s geographic reach and creating dedicated senior living opportunities to ensure aging with dignity.
- Over-the-Rhine International Film Festival: Building what has been celebrated as “one of the coolest film festivals in the world” to amplify diverse voices and stories.
- Community & Culture: Establishing a health and wellness program, bridging critical gaps in SNAP benefits for individuals.
- Financial Growth: Raising millions of dollars over the last decade to fund community-driven innovations and infrastructure.
Leadership Transition
To ensure a seamless transition, the LADD Board of Directors has appointed Neil Tilow as Interim CEO. Tilow is a highly respected figure in the regional nonprofit sector, having built and led Talbert House for 41 years.
“We are incredibly grateful for Susan’s visionary service and profound dedication over the past 15 years,” said LADD Board President Maggie Palazzolo. “She has guided our organization through a truly transformative era, expanding our reach, deepening our impact, and positioning LADD as a national leader in innovation. While we will miss her leadership, she leaves behind a powerful legacy and a strong foundation that Neil Tilow is uniquely qualified to build upon during this interim period.”
Following her departure from LADD, Brownknight will transition to the media in her new position as the Statewide CEO of Signal Ohio, a nonprofit media group dedicated to empowering communities with the information and accountability needed to ensure a thriving democracy.
